Above is an approximately 17 mm Cleopatra's Eye cut from blue CZ by faceter Lauren Hardy.

Celopatra's Eye is a design for large stones with light to medium color saturation. The 'Egyptian' or fat, marquise shaped outline was inspired by "Pharaoh's Eye", an old design for a 64 index appearing as Sapphire Faceting Guide No. 37 and credited as courtesy of Gems of the World. I originally started out trying to develop a more modern variation of Pharaoh's Eye for a 96 index using GemCad and meetpoint technique. The original design just isn't a meetpoint type, and I've yet to work out a meetpoint (or mostly so) rendering that closely resembles it.

However, Cleopatra's Eye spun off while I was working with preforms to generate the shape. It is a simple double barion which employs an Omni preform to generate the girdle outline. Girdle facets g1-g5 are cut to meet corresponding p1 pavilion facets and generate the outline. Then the corresponding b1-b5 barion facets are cut on the pavilion, creating a level girdle line.

The crown c1-c5 and c6 facets are derived from the pavilion b1-b5 and p1 facets by tangent ratio and reflection through the plane of the girdle, so they 'stack' in the crown and pavilion plan views. The c7 facets are step cut to create a circular 'iris', and the c8 facets create 12 embellishing, pyramid shaped facets around the arc of the iris. The table creates the 'pupil'.

If you cut a Cleo of your own, be sure and let me know what you've cut and how you've made out.
