There aren't any known areas to collect crystallized mineral specimens in the state anymore. To my knowledge, most are closed off to the general public or have been sold (Rucks Pit).

Fossils, on the other hand, are plentiful on the peace river which is on your route, though you'd have to take the country roads through the state and not I-75. Just be sure not to collect on any state park, refuge or conservation land. That is illegal. You would also need a state fossil permit which can be purchased from the Florida Museum of Natural History.
