How to remove oxidation from rhodocrosite rough

I recently bought an old collection that had been outside for years, and almost thru-out some totally black material. A chip broke off and there was bright pink underneath. I took the piece and sanded it on a Genie. It was Rhodocrosite! How do you clean the black oxidation off, without sanding every piece? Also, how do you store rhodocrosite rough to prevent the black oxide?
Thanks in advance.
