Is it even a rock?

I uploaded a photo of this in the photo gallery. The description is 'Is it even a rock?'

This was found about 30" underground, in the last scoop of dirt removed from a posthole, near Huntsville, AL.

At first glance I thought it was a piece of cannon shot. It is heavy, but a magnet ignores it. Not iron.

The surface appears to be made up of scale like pieces and the edges of the pieces reflect, like the edge of a crystal. Some of that can be seen in the picture.

There is a slight irregular depression on one end, also visible in the center of the picture, that appears very similar to what one would find on a piece of fruit where the stem was attached.

Anyone have any idea what it might be?
