I have had good results with very fragile specimens by wrapping them loosely in many layers of toilet paper, then in plastic bubble wrap before boxing. Cotton or fiberfill works as well, just keep it fluffy. The idea is to "float" the specimen in soft packing. This technique should NOT be used with needle-like crystals that might snag the wrapping.
