I use a 18" Beacon Star rotateing flat lap...I learned on one and like the hands on part of it...also made a leather covered plywood lap surface for polishing...if all you want to do is a slab (flat surface) you can use a piece of plate glass with grit and water..make figure 8's ...after you go 220, 400, and 600 you can use leather tacked down to some plywood with tin oxide to polish...may not be the fastest but cheap...vibrating laps can make a mess to cleanup..some make shower caps to put over the pan which helps...good luck...Mike
