Here's another thought. Someone on here had mentioned that they used something like a large slab rock in their reservoir so as to reduce the amount of oil necessary to bring the oil level up to proper height. I understand your concern about the cost of the oil but utilizing a method like this may be the ticket. Even if it is nothing more than bricks, enough of them in your reservoir would reduce the amount of oil needed. However, I would study it closely to make absolutely certain that there isn't any way for them to shift and cause a serious problem. There are people that do the same thing in their toilet tanks, to reduce water usage.
