Fran, I haven't been down that way for a while, but haven't heard of any trouble in the area. I live in New Mexico. As far as collecting there, the site certainly isn't as rich in surface material as it once was but you can still find nice pieces of jasper/agate with a little effort. Fall/winter/spring is a good time. Summers can really get hot and brings out the rattlesnakes. Try this:
