Polyurethane just might help for all I know, as halite is hygroscopic and absorbs moisture from the air. However, if I were you, I would first try some on the bottom or other not visible surface as I don't know how the poly solvent will affect the surface.

BTW, I don't think it is "collecting salt," but dissolving and recrystalizing at the bottom.
