Non collector Question

I will try and upload a picture of what I am talking about. I bought a large stone that was made to hold a candle in northern California. I thought it was quartz. I have had the stone out as decoration and it has started growing around the base with what appears to be salt collecting where it meets the speaker it is on. It is also in front of a window.

I am wondering if I clean and dry the stone can I put a coat of poloyurathane on it. Will that keep it from collecting salt. It often seems at times that it has moisture around it. Maybe condensation.

Thoughts
