Hi Sherry

I was kind waiting for someone to jump in and try to help you, it did not happen so here goes. For the moment lets assume the material was all the same hardness because if I am reading you right all the stones had scratches.
That white grit you noticed in the cracks is more the likely not grit, but slurry created by the grinding action of the grit. This white material and where it is hiding is probably the problem.
