I suppose it's possible but the hardness doesn't seem right. Goethite is listed as being 5 - 5 1/2 and if I recall this specimen was 7, at least with my MineraLab pick set. And if anyone is wondering if the picks are sharp I can assure you that they are indeed. My guess is that the hardness is actually in the mid 6's. 6 will not scratch the surface but 7 does. One other thing is that this specimen is weekly magnetic. My handbook does not list Goethite as being magnetic at all, week or strong. I do not have a formal geological background and I admit I only offer possibilities as to answers to questions that are submitted here. In saying that, I accept your input as to a possibility as to what this specimen could be. One day I hope to find out for certain as to what this specimen actually is. Until then I have a very nice specimen to wonder about.
