I believe the tool you guys are referring to is called an atlatal. The ones I have seen or described are usually made of wood and have either a wood or bone "hook" on the end that would fit into a concave hole on the end of the foreshaft of the spear. It was designed to increase both the range and power with which a spear could be thrown. The foreshaft was then attached to a dart that would detach when it made contact with a prey animal.

Can you take a photo of the total artifact so that I can see what it looks like? Also how long is it? Does the hole in the end go the entire length of the artifact? What part of the country are you from?
