Back in the late 50s I had a friend bought trough the mail a kit to grind your own telescope lens. It consisted of two clear glass blanks about six inches in diameter and about an inch and a half thick. You would rube the two blanks together with grit in between and than polish, one of the blanks would become concave and the other convex. This was done by hand although it would not be hard to motorize the operation. After al a spear machine is similar you would just need to figure to go from convex (Spear) to concave (Cup or Bowl).
