Yes, I agree the thing does look like some kind of handle, and your suggestion makes a lot of sense. A simpler and more common device for throwing a spear is the "atlatl" (an Aztec word that has been adopted for the device), which is a stick or board with a handle on one end and a cross-stop at the other. The spear is thrown with an overhand motion.

I don't know if my attempt at a drawing will come out correctly.

I do think, however, that you are probably on the right track in seeing the artifact as some sort of handle. The shape certainly seems to indicate that is meant to fit in the hand. You have piqued my curiosity about the thing, so thanks for the pictures and discussion. I hope you can learn more about it.

This reminds me of a science fiction story I read years ago. Archeologists in the future were trying to figure out what a glazed pottery dome-shaped artifact from the twentieth century was used for. Everything from a ritual object to a sound resonator were suggested by the scientists. In reality it was a toilet bowl they were looking at upside down!
