I finally found my National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Rocks and Minerals. For anyone that has this great reference book, if you look at plate #170 in the front of the book, that is exactly what this rock looks like. I have to believe that these crystals are in fact corundum. The host rock is not identified within the description on the plate, bummer.
