Re: Need to know if this is a Geode..

Samantha,
If all there is is the opening that you show in the photo, then I would vote no, it is not a geode. But if you were to use the definition from the World English Dictionary, then from the Latin "geodes" meaning precious stone, it would probably classify as a geode simply because I am certain it is precious to you. Many rocks have openings similar to that which you show in your photo, I have many myself,
but I would not consider mine to be geodes. I'm going out on a limb here but I would
venture to say that if you asked the question "does the hollow of a geode have to be
completely enclosed within the host rock or stone?" I would say that most would agree that yes, the hollow of a geode should be completely enclosed within the host rock or stone. I'm not 100% certain as to what truly defines a geode. Does the hollow of a geode have to be a certain percentage of the overall size of the rock or stone? Is there a maximum wall thickness for it to be considered as a geode? Many so called agates have openings in the centers. Are they in fact geodes? I will be interested to read any other responses to your question.
I have a question. Does a geode cease to exist once you cut it? If one were to define a geode as a hollow completely enclosed within a rock or stone, then once you cut it it is no longer completely enclosed is it? All you are left with is a rock with a hole in it, and if you are lucky maybe some crystals. So please, send me those worthless rocks with holes in them, I will give them a good home.
