Re: Re: Repolishing Rock Spheres
Hi Joe and Rudy,
I had already tried the oven cleaner by the time I got your message, It didnt do anything.
I got the Iron Off over the weekend and tried it half of one of the spheres. It turned some parts grey and didnt do much on other areas.
Im including some photos to show my problem. Its not just that they are covered in soot, but the smoke really permeated the surface on some of the more porous ones like malachite and chrysocolla. The agates have changed color. The quartz crystals came out just fine, unless they had some inclusions, which absorbed the soot.
The first photo is one of the entertainment center where the collection was displayed. As you can see by the melted stereo right next to them, it got very hot.
The second photo shows the before picture of the cabinet, with insets of two of the spheres after I cleaned them. You can see how the jasper has changed color. The one on the left was white with snowy white druzy. The one on the right has turned muddy and grey compared to its original color. Do you think this color change goes all the way through? Or can it be ground off?
I have another quartz one with a white druzy pocket which I have had some success soaking it in Oxy Clean. I thought maybe those denture tablets that fizz may work but I have not had a chance to try that experiment yet. Will keep you posted.
Thank you for all your help!
Will post this on Rock Net so others can read but I dont think I can post photos.
