Re: Commercial Message Posted on Rock Net
The post you are referring to was a tough call from a moderation and policy point of view. There is definitely self promotion from the dealer imbedded in it. But without that dealer's post, there would have been no show announcement on Rock Net.
I'm keen on helping to promote gem and mineral shows hosted by non-profit clubs and societies, as they provide significant educational venues for the public at large. They also generate the lion's share of operating revenue for many clubs and societies.
I've historically allowed what I consider to be a reasonable and constrained amount of self promotion embedded by dealers posting club show announcements to other discussion groups that I moderate, where outright commercial advertising by dealers is also prohibited. I think in the overall scheme of things, more good than harm results from this bending of the rules.
And so I decided to allow similar dealer posted show announcements here on Rock Net. What is not allowed on Rock Net is outright advertising by commercial entities. I provide more appropriate venues for that elsewhere which are also free use, such as the Rock Trader Classifieds. Defining a "commercial entity" is also a bit grey of course, but if it quacks like a duck, it is a duck...
