Inexpensive Video Macro Camera

The little camera and software included in Claymation Studio 3.0 Deluxe by Honestech is a great device for photographing specimens close-up. This is essentially a toy made for animation, and the camera looks like a robot dog, but it seems well-made and works wonderfully for photographing minerals and fossils. The drawbacks? Well, it does look like a toy dog, and although it takes individual frames one-by-one, it only saves the pictures as a video (no still pictures). There is, however, free software (and some you can pay for) on the internet that allows you to break the video into individual pictures. This is an inexpensive, easy and relatively fast way to go if you don't have a real macrophotography camera.
