Tim, location is everything in this case. It sounds as though what you've got may well be a piece of slag. The leftovers from steel mills in my area (southern Lake Michigan) look for all the world like meteorites, and show a ferrous rust in places, but aren't magnetic. If you found this specimen in an area with steel mills or other heavy industry that uses steel nearby anywhere nearby, I'd say that's your culprit.
