Thanks for the reply. It seems, then, that I will have to invest in an agate mortar. I planned to do some relatively simple chemical tests as well as specific gravity measurement using a pycnometer. Stainless steel is too soft for my purposes although I can use it until I get something better. I had assumed the steel was harder than 5.5.

I appreciate the information as I could not relate the indentation measurements to Moh's scale.
