Mortar and pestle

I need to grind to powder small amounts of mineral specimens and I have questions regarding mortar and pestle sets. In the literature I have seen suggestions of using an iron or agate mortar and pestle, both of which are either difficult to find or expensive. I have a stainless steel mortar and pestle and wonder if this would be adequate. I can't find a direct comparison of the relative hardness of the stainless steel (18/10), but I believe it should be nearly as hard or maybe harder than agate. What, if any, problems would there be using stainless steel? There would seem to be less chance of contamination of the sample compared to cast iron.

If stainless steel is adequate, why is there be no mention in the literature?
