Unknown Rock

My brother-in-law ran into a vein of rock while digging in the swamp behind his house in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The composition is similar to conglomerate but it does not appear to be sedimentary in nature. It is dark grey with large grains (3/16-1/4"), very porous, and quite heavy for its size. I could provide a photo if this web site has the capability.
