Kelly, recognizing any rock can be difficult until someone has shown you what they look like, Agate is quite easy and distinctive, but you need to know what features of the stone give it its Agatyness. I suggest getting to a club or locating someone that can show you some. For what its worth the rock generally has a waxy look if smooth or broken and quite often shows colors that will not be generally seen in other rocks, Agate nodules also often have very distinctive hemispherical dimples on the outside.
