Tony,
Onyx, Calcite, Gypsum -- this illustrates the difficulties of IDing with just a photo. Even if you don't have a hardness testing kit if you google Mohs scale you should find info on getting the approximate hardness with a penny, glass, pocket knife, etc. Also, take a close look at how the crystal appears where it is broken--any field guide (or google) can explain cleavage and fracture. Let us know what you find out :)
