Like John mentioned, a picture would be the best help here to determine the type of rock you have.
By the way you describe it it sounds like a Laker. Lake Superior Agates are known to be found in the Iowa area. Many Lakers do have a dark red outer skin and shades of red mixed with other colors in the interior.
Google (images) Lake Superior Agates to see if any of them resemble what you have.
If you are able to submit a picture here that would be great. I know I would love to see the rock and many others would too.
