Re: Help Save Rockhound State Park, New Mexico

How do rockhounds let the government know that we are not a danger to the natural resources of their parks and public lands. Rockhounding within given limits is a healthy form of exercise and leads to much knowledge of natural resources. Also the hobby frequently leads to interest in lapidary and jewelry making -- all forms of supporting business activity.

The few rocks a rockhound takes are not materially changing the overall natural resources of the country. Only when large equipment is brought in and entire areas dug up is there a real impact.

whether rockhounding is a declining hobby of not, many people love to find a memento of an excursion.

It discourages much enjoyment of mineral resources to say nothing can be taken.

I can understand out desire to protect plants, animals and other living things, however taking a few limited rocks (up to 25 pounds) will not jeopardize the environment.

Sincerely
