This is what I have done to prevent chipping as you describe. First I use a piece of tubing about i/2 inch diameter all around the inside perimeter of the lap. Then I place a piece of the tubing around each piece I put in the lap. I get my plastic tubing at Home Depot and cut it to size to make the donut to put around the rock. I also have used old pully belts for this and they work fine. In making those plastic tubing donuts I cut the tubing to size and then join the two ends with a short piece of a wood dowel. Works for me. I hope this helps.
