Re: Polishing machine info request

Hi Larry,

I have a copy of the operating instructions and parts list for the B&I 10" Gem Maker Model 1422. I think Sears also sold these under their own label in the past. I picked up one of these units for cheap at the Tucson Show several years ago.

I've posted a copy of an exploded diagram and parts list for the Model 1422 to the Rock Net photo gallery:

If yours is a 6" unit, it may differ significantly. If the documentation for my unit will be of help to you, contact me and I'll send you a copy:

I don't know much about the history of B&I lapidary equipment or the spread of different model machines they may have manufactured. The documentation I have for the Model 1422 gives B&I's address as Burlington, Wisconsin, so they must have moved their operations at some point.

I have my Model 1422 all apart now, which took a bit of doing as several of the fasteners were corroded tight and required penetrating lubricant, time, and a good deal of banging about to break them loose.

I'm planning on restoring it, including bead blasting down to bare metal and repaint. There was an apparently optional 32-index faceting head available for these units, an accessory I'd really like to acquire to complete the restoration.

Keep on Rock'n!
