Tammis, you seem to be doing just about everything right. The only thing you didn't make clear is drill time versus cooling off time. Even if the stone being drilled is submerged in water, if steady pressure is applied, even light pressure, without often backing the drill off to cool it will burn up. The only other point I might make is about the drill bits. Buy the best you can afford. Many of the bargain brands available are, quite frankly, not worth the trouble chucking up.
