Ray was correct; those are def corundum var. ruby xls. ERven though those xls are broken, I can tell they have an hexagonal cross-section, which corundum has. Dennis - marble would have a lot of WHITE calcite cleavages, which this has none; it does have the greyish (due to weathering; this was a surface piece) wavy layers of zoisite that's very typical for this specimen.

As the chromian zoisite greenstone belt cuts across several African countries, I'm afraid Africa is all you'll get, for now.
