There is another kind of wood that holds the grit best. I'd have to google Stones in Jewelry on yahoo groups to see what kind they said. Opal Auctions also has a good forum as does Opalmine for hints. Good luck. If you are doing Virgin Valley, mexican, or african, remember they are heat sensitive and are porous to water. They do carve wonderfully by hand.
