I might add that our old Highland Park 18 inch saw does not have a splash shield and works just fine, although leaks are more of a problem with more oil splashing about. I would think your old saw is usable, as is, with a little leak sealing. Adding a splash shield and shut off switch would improve the operation, but is not required for operation. Our old Highland Park saw has been running for over 50 years and is still going strong although the motor has been replaced twice that I am aware of. I will most likely replace the bushings on the shaft of the power feed in the near future as they are getting quite worn.
