Son Collecting

My son is 10 and is really getting into collecting rocks and understanding fossils. After a few years, this has started into a 4-H project as well. We live in Indiana and wondered if there are actually places in Indiana that sell rocks etc... that he can go to and choose some items to add to his collection on his own. The internet is fine...but I do not think it is as much fun. We are having problems trying to find a store. We have been to a few museums but their supply is always limited and scarce.

Also, we want to buy a few books on the topic as well...There are soooooo many. Can anyone suggest a few as great starter books?

Can we collect anything on our own that is not in a state park? Or are there other limitations?

I also have something I would like someone to take a look at for me. When I was in middle school, I found something in a creek that someone thought might be a petrified hornet's nest. Where would I go to find this out for sure?

Thanks for any input. the mom
