Lynn, the best start for any newbie is with a rockhound club in your area - if one is available. Another positive way to gather useful information is through reading books and magazines on the subject. Many states have rockhounding guides to specific areas within that state's borders - check out your local library. Gem and mineral shows are another source of information. And, of course, this site has a treasure trove of useful information there for the finding. Good luck and welcome to a most fascinating, and addictive, hobby.
