Re: Tumbling Agate

Hi Ken
Both Ward and James are right about the speed that the tumbler barrel run at. I have tumbled or had tumblers running non-stop since late 70s. I tell people that ask about tumbling you just cant get a barrel to run to slow. This is made easier because I make my own tumblers.

Also Wards suggestion of adding pellets to reduce the shock also works, but a less expensive way to handle this is to use broken pieces of styro-foam. Break the styro-foam into pieces 1 or 2 inches even styro-foam shipping peanuts will work. The way any cushioning agent works is to cushion the rock till a slurry builds up in the barrel to cushion your rock. There is a little difference in the handling of styro-foam and plastic pellets with both you need to put the rock, grit and water in the barrel first. With styro-foam you add the styro-foam right to top of the barrel. Because styro-foam will break down to help form the slurry that cushions your rocks, I run my barrels in 30 day cycles and after 30 days there will be almost no styro-foam left. With plastic pellets they do lose some of their mass but not like styro-foam. Depending on your barrel size leave 1 to 2 inches of air space at the top of your barrel with plastic pellets. Also remember to clean up the plastic pellets because they are reusable. In addition to that I would not recommend that you use the same plastic pellets in 220 grit that you used in 80 grit or any other grit for the matter because of cross contamination of grits.
I hope this helps, and happy tumbling.
