Re: collecting trip advice
Route 82/180 from Carlsbad, New Mexico to El Paso, Texas is a scenic route that passes near Carlsbad Caverns (turn off at White City), goes thru Guadalupe pass, and out across the Salt Flat basin. Between Guadalupe pass and El Paso, check road cuts for white late Permian-age Castile Formation laminated gypsum and dolomite. This is a unique formation that is thought to represent annual cycles of flooding and drying. Please note that between White City and El Paso there are NO facilities and temperatures are in the high 90's to low 100's in the summer. Much further down the road is Rockhound State Park outside of Deming, New Mexico. Feel free to email me for more information.
