That's a good point about heat in the groove, but I think that reinforces the argument for water over oil. Oil is the better *lubricant*, but water is a much, MUCH better *coolant* than oil, and especially in small spaces because water can go places no other fluid can. The deeper the slot, the more advantage water has over oil.

I guess another way to ask the question is why are both a coolant AND a lubricant needed in a saw? (Again ignoring the rust problem for the moment.)
