Polishing Lapis

Greetings,
I am having problems polishing lapis. My stock is high-grade gem quality; deep blue with lots of pyrite specks. But because the pyrite is soft and has a low melting point, the pyrite ends up smearing its self over the face of the stone, ruining the finish. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks, Mike
