Aha! That kind of thinly laminated texture makes me think it may be sinter or travertine, like from hot springs. You're right, the black could be layers of silica, although there's a possibility they could be calcite. Can you scratch the black parts with a penny? If yes, it may be calcite; if no, it is likely quartz/silica.
