A Question For You Math Heavy Hitters

Is there a simple formula for coming with Square area in MM of the standard oval that is used in most cabochon templates?
Is there also a simple formula for coming with Square area in MM of a circle?

Example: If I take a piece of wire and wrapped around 16mm round dowel and than removed the wire from the dowel and shaped into an oval. What size oval would I get?
