Hi Mark,

Color change and color shift garnets do occur in nature and are considered very rare. Most are found in Africa, Madagascar and Sri Lanka. The color change occurs due to very small amounts of rare earths such as Bastnasite. What you describe sure sounds like a color change/shift. Have someone more familiar with garnets confirm this for you... then go buy the property you found them on!

Google "color change garnets" and you will find lots of information on the subject.
