Mark, I do facet and though determining wether what you have is facetable may sound like it takes an expert, you can come pretty close yourself. Garnet tends to be quite dark but if you hold it to a brite light and can see through it, and its has few cracks or other inclusions, in other words if it looks "good", "clean", your on the right track to quality rough. If you can't get light to pass through it, it's likely that it can't be faceted. It may seem simple, It is.
