Geode Interrupted?

I had a few tons of 2" river rock delivered for some landscaping. My boys found one cracked open with a hollow center and a column/post feature inside. The second one they crack open was also not solid. The core was white pasty/clay, like thick tooth paste. In the last two weeks the stuff has dried out and its now a very soft chalk. Anyone have an idea what these hollow rocks might be. I told told them they could have be the start of a geode?
