Rockhounding in Colorado?

I am planning a vacation to Colorado in August centered in Denver. I want to get at least one good day of rockhounding in and looked up available books for public access sites. Amazon.com lists two books: Rockhounding Colorado, 2nd: William A. Kappele; and Colorado Rockhounding: A Guide to Minerals, Gemstones, and Fossils (Rock Collecting) by Stephen M. Voynick.

I would very much appreciate some opinions on these two books - which one is the most up-to-date, comprehensive, and describes sites requiring minimal tools - I'm flying out from northern Virginia and can't take a lot of tools. I'm also open to suggestion from Rockhounds like me who know a good place, but isn't in the books.

Keep on Rocking,
