..."rock, or not?" Sure looks like stromatolite, to me. Fossilized Archean Algae. Oldest Fossil on the Planet. Billions of years old, some... If you're looking for the most esoteric and little-understood corner of geological science and study, well...you just found it. Yours looks not quite like the Gunflint Iron red Mary Ellen quartz Jasper, but most like the dolomite limestone type from around the Disraeli-Seagull Lakes area of the SW Nipigon Plate. There's also similar brown quartz based-stromatolite at the 2 amethyst quarries closest to Lake Superior...the colour is the biggest difference. The person who is the leading World Authority on Stromatolite Research must be lonelier than the Maytag Repairman. Most likely the World's most lonely person, too...
