Best bet is to join a local club and learn from the oldtimers and those folks you say are "are rock crazy around here".
They will go on field trips, they will have regular meetings and educational events and I have only met one club ever whose members were unwilling to teach and share their knowledge. Arizona is full of all sorts of fascinating rocks and fossils and minerals and gemstones and etc.... Enjoy your new hobby and watch your pocketbook.... it is all too easy to spend more than you should....
