Dear Peter:
I was recently at Greens Garnet Mine in Roxbury, CT. Check Mindat for a discussion and some directions to the location. You can readily find garnets of different sizes and quality. I only spent a few hours on the way home from a college visit with my daughter, but did find some nice specimens. Coming out of NYC is easy as you can grab the Taconic Prkway to 84 East to the exit west of Danbury for Roxbury.
