Rock that shattered on its own

I found a very solid charcoaled colored potato shaped rock with two holes in it like a oversized button at the beach in Oregon a couple months back. My wife kept it indoors for about a month in her kitchen window sill, and then put it outside on our banister. Within a weak it began to shatter and crumble into tiny pieces all on its own, now all we have is a handful of tiny jagged rocks. If you pinch a piece it continues to crumble? Any thoughts?
